   GENÈVE - De Verenigde Staten zouden heel goed Europa kunnen opvolgen en het nieuwe epicentrum van de coronacrisis kunnen worden. Daarvoor waarschuwt de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie. De WHO ziet een „zeer sterke toename” van het aantal besmettingsgevallen in de VS.
   
   De WHO wil nog niet zo ver gaan om Amerika nu al de grootste besmettingshaard te noemen, maar als er niets verandert, is het land daar wel naar op weg. In de afgelopen 24 uur werd maar liefst 40 procent van nieuwe besmettingen in de VS geconstateerd. Ruim 42.000 Amerikanen zijn al besmet met het coronavirus.

   „Ze kampen daar met een zeer grote uitbraak en een uitbraak die in intensiteit toeneemt”, zei woordvoerder Margaret Harris van de WHO. Toch denkt Harris dat de VS de epidemie nog onder controle kan houden, door veel te testen, zieken te isoleren en uit te zoeken hoe personen zijn besmet.
   
   Maandag was volgens Harris de dag dat het aanstal besmettingen wereldwijd het sterkst steeg tot nu toe. Toen kwamen er meer dan 40.000 nieuwe gevallen bij, waarmee het totaal op 334.981 kwam. Sinds de pandemie begon, zijn 14.652 mensen overleden.

   RICHMOND, Va. -- Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam says that public schools will remain closed for the rest of the current school year and certain types of businesses, like bowling alleys, gyms and theaters, must close in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Northam's announcement Monday comes as the state announced that the number of people testing positive for the virus continues to rise and is now at 254.
   
   "Today I'm directing all schools in Virginia to remain closed at least through the end of this academic year," the governor announced. "School closures are necessary to minimize the speed at which COVID-19 spreads and protect the capacity of our healthcare system. I know this raises a lot of questions for parents and also for our students."

   Gates did not mention Trump by name, but the American president has said that he may decide to relax some of the country’s “social distancing” in order to jumpstart the country’s shut-down economy.     WASHINGTON (ANP/BLOOMBERG) - Economen waarschuwen voor de nadelige effecten van Trumps plan om de economie zo vlug mogelijk weer op te starten. Zij denken dat het averechts kan werken als de Amerikaanse president de coronamaatregelen te vroeg afzwakt.
    
    Voormalig IMF-hoofdeconoom Maury Obstfeld waarschuwt voor meer chaos in het land wanneer de president de regels versoepelt, terwijl lokale bestuurders juist strengere maatregelen nemen. Bovendien vreest hoofdeconoom Michael Feroli van JPMorgan Chase dat de economie een tweede klap krijgt als de soepelere regels een nieuwe piek in het aantal besmettingen veroorzaken. Dit zou tot een diepere en langere recessie kunnen leiden.

    Trump zei dinsdag dat hij de economie graag weer ziet draaien rond Pasen op 12 april. „Op Paaszondag zullen we weer volgepakte kerken zien door het hele land”, voegde hij toe. De gerenommeerde Amerikaanse viroloog Anthony Fauci, die de president bijstaat in de kwestie, ondersteunde het voornemen maar adviseerde flexibel om te gaan met die deadline.
    
    „Natuurlijk wil niemand niets versoepelen terwijl je ziet wat er nu aan de hand is in New York”, zei Fauci. Die stad is zwaar getroffen door het virus. Trump zei de viroloog te volgen en zijn beleid te zullen baseren op „harde feiten.”
    
    De oproep van de president leidde tot irritatie bij veel gouverneurs, die nu juist strenge maatregelen treffen om de crisis te beteugelen. „Ik hoop en bid dat Trump iets weet wat wij allen niet weten”, zei gouverneur van West-Virginia en Trump-aanhanger Jim Justice.

    In a new Gallup poll, 49% approve of the job Trump is doing as president while 45% disapprove, matching the highest his approval rating has ever been in Gallup surveys. A Monmouth University poll released on Monday showed Trump at 46% approval, again the best he has done in that poll in more than three years.
    
    In the Gallup poll, 60% of Americans approve of the job Trump is doing in handling the crisis while 38% disapprove of how he has done. Six in 10 independents approve of how Trump has done on the coronavirus as do more than 1 in 4 (27%) of Democrats. In the Monmouth poll, 50% say Trump has done a good job with coronavirus while 45% said he has done a bad job.

    Gezien het feit dat zes van de hoogste inkomstengenererende eigendommen van Donald momenteel gesloten zijn voor het bedrijfsleven, en hoezeer zijn eigendommen met schulden zitten. We moeten afwachten of hij kiest voor gezondheid van het Amerikaanse volk. Of vroegtijdig winkels en zaken opent voor zich zelf en zijn rijke donateurs.     ...maar president Donald Trump liet wel al uitschijnen dat hij delen van zijn land tegen Pasen weer operationeel wil hebben. “Dat is compleet ondenkbaar. Onwaarschijnlijk ook dat hij geflankeerd wordt door wetenschappers. Anthony Fauci is op hiv-gebied een heel grote mijnheer. Maar als ik achter Trump zou staan, zou ik zijn micro afnemen.
