As Ahold Delhaize looks to embed initiatives to help it become an industry-leading local omnichannel retailer, we round up news from the retailer as it expands online and with stores across Belgium and Luxembourg.
Delhaize introduces prepared meal delivery service
Delhaize, with Tastyoo, a food technology start-up, has launched a delivery service for freshly prepared dishes. The service is aimed at meeting shoppers’ changing expectations and needs, which have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The meals, which change weekly, are prepared by chefs employed by Tastyoo, who operate from a central kitchen in Uccle. Meals cost less than €10 and are delivered in 30 minutes of ordering. The service is available in Ixelles, Uccle, Brussels-City, Etterbeek and Saint-Gilles, with delivery made free of charge. To expand its coverage and enable shoppers in other cities to buy from it, Tastyoo will open new dark kitchens in the medium term.
…And launches new Direct Box to meet home delivery demand
In conjunction with packaging firm DS Smith, Delhaize has developed the new Direct Box, which it says will help it meet the growing demand for home deliveries. Delhaize and DS Smith collaborated to make sure the box supported its sustainability aims and targets. The Direct Box is made from 100% recycled cardboard that is also fully recyclable after use and should help the retailer save 160 tonnes of packaging material annually. The companies said the step will also require them to operate 32 fewer delivery trucks in their supply chain.
