Mitac far behind Garmin, TomTom in 3Q10 global PND market share: Canalys statistics
Daniel Shen, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 16 November 2010]
Taiwan-based own-brand maker Mitac International's three brands Magellan, Mio and Navman had respective shares of 3.6%, 3.4% and 1.2% in the global GPS PND (portable navigation device) shipment market in the third quarter of 2010, with the aggregate of 8.2% much lower than 34.1% for Garmin and 30.9% for TomTom, Taiwan-based makers cited Canalys statistics as indicating.
There were 8.383 million GPS PNDs sold in the global market in the third quarter of 2010, a drop on year of 12.4%. The sales volume of 3.406 million units in the Europe, Africa and the Middle East market slipped 17.4% on year and the 3.21 million shipments in North America were down 11.2%, the sources indicated.
TomTom saw its market share in North America significantly increase from 20% in the third quarter of 2009 and 22% in the second quarter of 2010 to 31.2% last quarter, the sources noted.
While the GPS PND markets in North America and Europe are approaching saturation, it is difficult for international vendors to tap the large market potential in Asia Pacific because consumers' preferences and the distribution channel method vary from one country to another, while digital map databases are insufficient as well, the sources pointed out. Garmin and TomTom had a combined market share of 88% in North America and 69% in Europe, but together they occupy less than 20% of the Asia Pacific market, the sources indicated.
