    >From Reuters: --------------------- New software could bypass 3G licence - paper A Finnish professor has discovered a technical loophole that could eradicate the need for mobile phone licences worth nearly 60 billion pounds ($86.98 billion), the Times reported on Monday. Hannu Kari, a professor at Helsinki University of Technology, has developed software that would allow companies without third-generation (3G) mobile telecommunications licences to launch mobile Internet services in big cities. Finnish Internet service provider Jippii has adopted the technology. Harri Arho, vice-president at Jippii, told the Times he hoped to launch a mobile Internet service in London before mobile operators such as Vodafone and BT Cellnet, who paid around five billion each for their 3G licences. The news will come as a blow to Europe's telecoms companies, which are already facing fierce criticism for taking out huge loans to pay for 3G licences. Five companies paid a total of 22.5 billion pounds for 3G licences in Britain in April. Kari's software works by using a very high 2.4GHz radio frequency that has not been licensed by any European country. Aho says he has been assured by European Union officials that it will remain free, the Times said.
