   EBAY, which operates the world's largest online marketplace, said it earned net income of $279.2 million, or 20 cents a share, for the period ended Dec. 31, up from $205.4 million, or 15 cents, a year earlier. Excluding certain items, eBay earned $340.1 million, or 24 cents a share, topping by two cents the estimate of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call.
   
   Revenue rose 42% to $1.33 billion, better than the $1.29 billion analysts expected. EBay's payment business, which generates a commission each time consumers use it to pay for items purchased on its Web sites and other online stores, rose 48% to $304 million.
   
   "Revenue exceeded guidance, driven by accelerating sales in the U.S., Germany, PayPal and our new businesses, Skype and Shopping.com," said EBay Chief Financial Officer Rajiv Dutta, in an interview with MarketWatch.
   
   Ebay dominates the market for online auctions and has expanded its revenue base with its payments business, which now generates almost a quarter of its sales. Additionally, payments conducted off eBay accounted for 31% of total payment revenue.
   
   Still, eBay shares fell 6% in after-hours action, on concerns over eBay's outlook.
   
   In 2006, eBay said it expects to generate sales between $5.7 billion and $5.9 billion, in line with its outlook given during the last reporting period, but slightly below the $5.95 billion Wall Street is expecting.
   
   The company also expects to report adjusted 2006 earnings between 96 cents and $1.01 a share, in line with its prior outlook, below the consensus forecast of $1.02 a share. Dutta said that eBay expects Skype Technologies to generate $200 million in sales for the year, the same forecast eBay had given last quarter.
   
   Although its forecast is below expectations, eBay may simply be playing it conservative.
   
   "It is important to keep in mind that typically eBay's initial next year's guidance is extremely conservative," wrote Anthony Noto, an analyst at Goldman Sachs, about eBay's third-quarter results. "In fact, over the past 4 years, eBay has outperformed its original next year's revenue and earnings-per-share guidance by 13% and 23%, respectively."
