   PITTSBORO, NC -- (MARKET WIRE) -- February 13, 2007 -- Biolex Therapeutics today announced that its technology for optimizing monoclonal antibodies will be featured at the "Next Generation Antibodies and Antibody Technologies" session at the 9th Annual BIO CEO & Investor Conference. David Spencer, Ph.D., Biolex's Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President, Research and Development, will highlight the ability of the Company's LEX System(SM) to increase the efficacy and potency of monoclonal antibodies.    Monoclonal antibodies comprise the fastest growing class of protein therapeutics and are currently being used and developed primarily to treat cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and inflammatory diseases. Recently, Biolex announced results published in Nature Biotechnology demonstrating the ability of its proprietary LEX System to produce monoclonal antibodies that have enhanced potency and efficacy. The publication also describes the LEX System's ability to produce antibodies with homogeneous glycosylation structures, an additional major advantage of the LEX System compared to expression systems commonly used today, and key to reducing production risks, regulatory risks and costs.

   Hepatitis C komt vaker voor
   onder hiv-patiënten. De hivvereniging
   Nederland spreekt
   van een zorgwekkende toename.
   De groei wordt ook
   elders geconstateerd.
   Een grotere groep hiv-patiënten is
   besmet met de virale leverontsteking
   hepatitis C. Robert Witlox,
   directeur van de Nederlandse hivvereniging,
   ziet ‘een zorgwekkende
   groei’. “Met name onder homoseksuele
   mannen is er een stijging.
   We hopen dat het geen epidemische
   vormen gaat aannemen
   want het is nog volstrekt onduidelijk
   hoe de groei valt te verklaren.”
   Directeur Roel Coutinho, van het
   centrum infectieziektebestrijding
   van het RIVM bevestigt de toename
   al gaat het volgens hem ‘absoluut
   gezien nog om kleine aantallen’.
   Hij wijst er voorts op dat het niet
   een specifiek Nederlands probleem
   is. “We zien hetzelfde in Frankrijk
   en de VS gebeuren.”

   Het Nationaal Hepatitis Centrum
   vreest dat nog maar ‘het topje van
   de ijsberg’ in zicht is. “Waarschijnlijk
   is driekwart van de gevallen
   in Nederland niet bekend terwijl
   opsporing essentieel is”, aldus
   coördinatrice Paula van Leeuwen.
   “En dat geldt zeker voor hiv-patiënten
   want, voor het kunnen volhouden
   van de medicatie heb je
   een goede lever nodig en die wordt
   nu juist aangetast door deze hepatitis
   variant.” Het centrum schat
   het aantal besmettingen op 60.000.
   Arts infectieziektebestrijding
   van de GGD, Hannelore Götz, die
   onderzoek deed naar hepatitis C
   onder homoseksuele mannen wijst
   er tot slot op dat het niet om een
   seksueel overdraagbare aandoening
   onder de algemene bevolking
