But will EUV save the day? At least on paper, ASML appears to have a slight lead in EUV. The company has already shipped two "alpha" EUV tools, including one to Albany Nanotech and another to IMEC.
The real excitement starts by the end of 2009, when ASML is slated to ship what it calls a "pre-production" EUV tool. The tool is projected to have a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.25.
Martin van den Brink, executive vice president marketing and technology for ASML of the Netherlands, said the company has received orders for five pre-production systems. ASML did not identify the customers, throughput or price tag for the system. Some suggest that a EUV tool could run from $50-to-$70 million each
