   Voormalig vice-president Joe Biden heeft opgedaan een meer dan 20 punten voorsprong op president Trump onder de kiezers van 65 jaar en ouder, twee afzonderlijke peilingen - een van CNN en een van NBC News en de Wall Street Journal - gevonden.
   
   Waarom het er toe doet: Senioren zijn Amerika's meest betrouwbare kiezers - en een groep die onevenredig is getroffen door het coronavirus pandemie. Biden's winsten met senioren slechts enkele weken voor de dag van de verkiezingen kon hem een voorsprong in de opkomst van de kiezers.
   De peilingen kwamen ook na het eerste presidentiële debat vorige week, waarin Trump werd bekritiseerd door moderator Chris Wallace voor het voortdurend onderbreken van Biden en gaan na verloop van tijd.
   
   Door de nummers ... Onder de respondenten van 65 jaar en ouder vond CNN 60% van de kiezers voor Biden en slechts 39% voor Trump. NBC vond dat senioren Biden 62-35 steunden tegen Trump.
   NBC vond Biden met een voorsprong van 14 punten onder alle geregistreerde kiezers tegen Trump.
   CNN vond Biden met een voorsprong van 16 punten op Trump.
   
   Tussen de regels: Nationale peilingen zijn een ding, maar de verkiezingen is meer kans om neer te komen op een handvol swing staten.
   Pennsylvania, Florida, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan en meer staan op de wachtlijsten van beide kandidaten die naar de laatste dagen van hun campagnes gaan.
   
   Methodologie: CNN ondervraagd 1.205 waarschijnlijk kiezers met een foutmarge van 3,3%. NBC ondervraagd 800 waarschijnlijk kiezers met een foutmarge van 3,5%.

   The first sign of trouble came eight days ago. Donald Trump, desperate to find evidence of voting irregularities, told reporters, "It was reported in one of the newspapers that they found a lot of ballots in a river. They throw them out if they have the name 'Trump' on it, I guess."
   
   A day later, at a campaign rally, the president pushed the same line, telling supporters that "they" found "many, many ballots thrown into a river someplace." The day after that, Trump started treating his claim as if it were common knowledge, saying, "They found many ballots, as you know, in a riverbed."
   
   At this week's debate, the Republican added that ballots are "being dumped in rivers."
   
   Yesterday, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Trump was actually referring to absentee ballots in Wisconsin that were found with mail that ended up "in a ditch." (Last night, Trump nevertheless referred to ballots he believes were "thrown into a creek or a river.")
   
   It was embarrassing enough when the president's chief spokesperson effectively and grudgingly conceded that Trump's "river" references weren't accurate. It's quite a bit worse now that the underlying claim about ballots appears to be wrong, too. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported late yesterday:
   
   No Wisconsin absentee ballots were found in mail discovered in a ditch in the Fox Valley last week, the state's top election official said Thursday.
   
   Meagan Wolfe, director of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, told reporters during a virtual news conference, "There was mail found outside of Appleton and that mail did not include any Wisconsin ballots."

   Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar (D) said Wednesday that there was no “intentional fraud” involved in the discarding of nine military ballots in Luzerne County.
   
   "The investigation is still going on, but from the initial reports we've been given, this was a bad error," Boockvar said at a Wednesday virtual meeting, according to The Associated Press. "This was not intentional fraud. So training, training, training."
   
   Pennsylvania deputy secretary for elections Jonathan Marks said that in many cases, military or international ballots were received in envelopes that did not identify them as ballots. It is standard procedure to reseal such ballots and classify them with other absentee and mail-in ballots, according to Marks, who attributed the mistake to “confusion.”
   
   Marks echoed Boockvar, saying that the incident emphasized the need for more training. State Department officials are currently training election workers in Luzerne County on how to handle unmarked envelopes containing election materials.

   The order came from US district judge Nicholas Ranjan, a Trump appointee, earlier this month amid a lawsuit in Pennsylvania over several voting policies. The Trump campaign is suing to block the widespread use of official ballot dropboxes in the state in locations other than an election office, and to allow poll watchers to work in counties other than the ones they live in.
   
   The campaign also wants to block election officials from counting mail-in ballots if a voter forgets to put their mail-in ballot in a secrecy sleeve within the ballot return-envelope. The campaign argued in court that the current practices will lead to voter fraud without these changes.
   
   Ranjan last week ordered the campaign to turn over its evidence of the prevalence of fraud in Pennsylvania, including fraud related to dropboxes and vote by mail. While the Trump campaign cited a handful of mail-in ballot fraud cases in its original complaint, the campaign turned over little evidence of pervasive fraud in its partially redacted response. Certain documents in the filing were designated confidential and withheld from the Guardian.
   
   The campaign also offered no evidence of fraud specifically linked to dropboxes or mail-in ballots. The filing was first reported by Type Investigations. Several studies and investigations have shown that voter fraud is extremely rare.

   Ik kan het niet meer terug vinden, maar ik dacht begrepen te hebben dat het dan toch door ging via rechtstreekse videonet verbindingen.

    Het griepseizoen komt eraan! Elk jaar sterven veel mensen, soms meer dan 100.000, en ondanks het vaccin, aan de griep. Gaan we ons land sluiten? Nee, we hebben ermee leren leven, net zoals we leren leven met Covid, in de meeste populaties veel minder dodelijk !!!

    Een indringend gesprek voeren via een videoverbinding is linke soep, het kan dan stiekem worden opgenomen. Gewoon in een persoonlijk gesprek, onder vier ogen, is nog steeds veel effectiever.
