Logica seen as a takeover target

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - LogicaCMG, the Anglo-Dutch computer services company, said IT services revenues increased 3.3 pct for the half year and said chief operating officer Jim McKenna would become interim chief executive after Martin Read's retirement in September.

Logica said it was making progress in finding a successor to Read and its executive search team was working on a shortlist of candidates to replace Read who announced his early retirement in May days after a profit warning.

Logica -- seen as a takeover target after Read's resignation announcement -- said revenue in the first half was 1.52 bln stg.

The company kept its guidance for the full year unchanged and said it expected its UK business to return to growth in the second half of the year.

Panmure Gordon's George O'Connor said the trading update was "positive" and would fuel takeover interest from private equity firms. He kept his 'buy' recommendation on the company.

Logica repeated its forecast that the European IT services market will grow between 4 pct and 6 pct in 2007.

It said adjusted operating profit will be weighted slightly towards the second half than the previous year, mainly due to a weak UK commercial sector in the first half and previously disclosed costs.

Bridgewell Securities said the main challenge facing Logcia's new chief executive will be in expanding in "business process outsourcing" market, in suppliers run customers' IT, administrative and financial functions.

Logica said its organic revenue growth for continuing business in the first half was above the market rate in the Nordics (7 pct), the Netherlands (8 pct), Germany (10 pct) and France (10 pct).

UK revenues fell 9 pct, although within here there was 7 pct revenue growth in

European businesses miss out on potential savings worth 5 billion Euros in time and productivity in the field
    19 July 2007
An inability to provide real-time asset information to engineers in the field, combined with a lack of flexibility to reschedule their work dynamically, could be costing European businesses 5 billion Euros each year¹, according to new pan-European research² from LogicaCMG launched today.

LogicaCMG’s report has revealed that field service crews in the telecoms, utilities, transport and allied service industries spend over a third (39 per cent) of their time back at base or en route to jobs, and only 61 per cent of their time performing tasks in the field. By reducing travelling time and increasing productivity, companies with 500 field workers could achieve annual cost savings of almost 2 million Euros each.

Survey respondents felt that remote access to real time information on the location and status of assets could solve the productivity problem. They believe that this would save 8 per cent of travelling time and increase overall productivity in the field by 9 per cent.

There are big differences in productivity between the industry sectors analysed by the report. For example, European utility field service teams spend a lot more of their time (42 per cent) on non-productive tasks compared with telecommunications companies (34 per cent).

The key conclusion from the study is therefore that two-way, real-time information on the location and status of assets, combined with the ability to dynamically schedule work in the field, leads to significant improvements in field force productivity and increased customer satisfaction. This is now possible based on the implementation of new communication and geospatial technologies, which allow organisations to exchange information on asset location in real-time.

Nigel Spooner, Group Director for Enterprise Asset Management, LogicaCMG, explains what this means for the European field services industry: “This research highlights what is clearly a pressing problem for asset managers throughout Europe. We have a highly skilled workforce in place across the region which doesn’t yet have the means to carry out their work to the optimum levels of productivity. Information sharing is the key to solving this problem. By providing field service engineers with remote access to relevant information and giving managers the ability to reschedule work dynamically, LogicaCMG can help organisations to address this productivity gap.”

The research shows that there are considerable differences in results between the industries that were surveyed. This further emphasises the overwhelming need to share best practice across different industry sectors in order to reduce the overall European productivity gap and compete more effectively with other parts of the world.

The study also highlighted the top concerns of European field managers. An inability to reschedule workloads while engineers are on the move (80 per cent) was the highest frustration overall causing a negative impact on productivity and customer service. This issue was highest for field managers in utility companies (83 per cent) and lowest for those in road and rail (76 per cent). The inability to get real-time information to engineers was the biggest concern for airports (84 per cent) and improving customer information while at a call out was highest for utilities (84 per cent) and for telecommunications companies (86 per cent).

Nigel Spooner concludes: “If organisations can maintain and make available to their engineers accurate, real-time information about the location and condition of assets this could reduce operational costs by 7 to 8.5 per cent – an amount that could make a significant difference to profits for what are essentially low margin businesses. The lack of accurate information in the field has an impact on customer service quality too. Respondents noted that their customers report poor service because they are not given information on the time needed to complete work and fix faults.”
