   ArcelorMittal to increase wire rod prices in US
   In order to reflect the increased cost, recently ArcelorMittal Long Carbon North America has announced to raise the wire rod price by USD 120 per short ton from June 16th 2008.
   
   The reasons to raise the prices by ArcelorMittal are rising cost of raw materials and the strong demand. The company raised its wire rod price in May by USD 60 per short ton.
   
   Meanwhile, Ipsco is also raising the price by USD 170 to USD 270 per short ton effective June 29th 2008.

   ArcelorMittal and Cemig ink power supply deal in Brazil
   It is reported that Brazilian power utility Cemig has signed a long term power supply deal with local units of ArcelorMittal that could be worth as much as BRR 4.4 billion (USD 2.7 billion).
   
   Cemig controlled by the Minas Gerais state government and which has US utility AES Corp as a major shareholder in a statement said that it would supply ArcelorMittal units with an average of 313.5 MW double current levels, through 2020.
   
   It said it is one of the biggest deals ever signed within the unregulated part of Brazil's electricity market. Most power sales occur within the government regulated environment via a system of public auction.
   
   Energy intensive metals producers have been alarmed by a rise in energy prices at the end of last year and in early 2008, when Brazil narrowly avoided power rationing and they have been seeking to guarantee firm supplies.

   Energie is voor een bedrijf als AMS een 'grondstof' en die willen ze voor de lange termijn zekerstellen. Logisch natuurlijk maar ze doen het wel weer even! Mittal denkt al in termen van 2015-2020 terwijl de meeste bedrijven niet verder komen dan het budget voor volgend jaar. Dat is wel het voordeel als je zelf grootaandeelhouder bent zoals Lhaksmi en in principe alles naar je hand kunt zetten. Van mij heeft hij carte blanche.

   ArcelorMittal has announced to increase its base price for beams and sections for the third quarter, because of escalated raw material, energy and logistics costs.
   
   According to ArcelorMittal, the base price will be raised by EUR 40 per tonne. It said that for the second quarter it has increased by EUR 30 per tonne.
   
   Scrap surcharge has risen by EUR 200 per tonne since January for beams and sections.

   Bloomberg reported that ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker is talking to metal services company OAO Inprom about forming a strategic partnership in Russia.
   
   Mr Sergei Korzhov Inprom spokesman said that ArcelorMittal may acquire a minority stake or set up a joint venture.
   
   Mr Igor Konovalov CEO of Inprom said Inprom received three offers from major European steelmakers and steel distributing companies this year as it seeks funds to expand. The Russian company postponed an initial public offering twice last year.
   
   A tie up with Inprom would allow ArcelorMittal, which has operations in Ukraine and Kazakhstan, to expand in the Commonwealth of Independent States, the loose union of 12 countries that replaced the Soviet Union.

   ArcelorMittal Liberia iron ore mine crucial – WSJ
   The Wall Street Journal reported ArcelorMittal's plan to rehabilitate an iron ore mine in Liberia is a crucial test of whether the steelmaker can execute mining projects that underpin its expansion plans.
   
   The newspaper reported that the Liberian project will provide a new supply of iron ore from one of the few regions that have not already been locked down by one of the three largest miners of the raw material.
   
   The newspaper cited Mr Robert Ferguson project manager as saying that ArcelorMittal has to build infrastructure including a power plant.
   
   The newspaper said that output will begin in 2009, initially at 500,000 tonnes a year and increasing to as much as 25 million tons by 2011. It added that the project will boost ArcelorMittal's captive iron ore supply by more than half, from 46 million tonnes a year currently.

   Coal mine accident at ArcelorMittal in Kazakhstan
   ArcelorMittal has confirmed that that an accident occurred this morning at its Tentekskaya Mine in Kazakhstan.
   
   It said that “100 people were working in the mine when the accident occurred at approximately 4AM Kazakhstan time this morning. And 95 were safely evacuated. At present 5 people are still missing.”
   
   The release said that “Although rescue services are on site and every effort is being made to locate those missing, it is believed that tragically they have died as a result of the accident.”
   
   The release added that “Senior members of ArcelorMittal management are currently present at the mine. A full investigation will be launched into the cause of the accident. However at present the company believes that there was no explosion, as has been reported early today. Further information will be announced as it becomes available.”
   
   Mr Frank Pannier CEO of ArcelorMittal Kazakhstan said that “I deeply regret that there has been an accident in one of our mines in Kazakhstan. Fortunately the evacuation procedure worked well and we have managed to bring 95 people safely to the surface. Nevertheless it looks as though there have been 5 tragic fatalities as a result of the accident. At this moment I do not wish to speculate about the causes of this accident, but I must state that my absolutely priority as the new CEO here in Temirtau is to ensure the safety of our workers and ArcelorMittal will continue to invest heavily in the ongoing modernization of the mines.”

   Trend Capital reported that ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker plans to present a takeover proposal shortly for an ailing Bulgarian steel plant.
   
   The report cited Mr Volker Schwich vice president for eastern European projects of ArcelorMittal as indicating that the plan to be presented this week to Bulgarian authorities includes a pledge to invest USD 500 million in the debt laden Kremikovtzi plant.
   
   Mr Schwich, in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, said that Kremikovtzi currently runs at one third of capacity and ArcelorMittal would seek to boost production to full capacity.

    ArcelorMittal and Borusan Turkish mill JV cleared by EU
    Thomson Financial reported that the European Commission has cleared steel group ArcelorMittal and Turkish peer Borusan's proposed 50:50 JV which will see a USD 500 million investment in the construction of a new hot strip mill at Gemlik in Turkey.
    
    The mill which will be located next to ArcelorMittal and Borusan's jointly operated Borcelik plant on the Marmara Sea coast, is planned to operate in first half of 2010 with a capacity of 4.8 million tonnes.
    
    The transaction was reviewed under the EU's 'simplified' merger review procedure for cases which the commission believes do not pose competition concerns.

    AsiaPulse reported that ArcelorMittal saw its bid to buy a big stake in state owned steel maker PT Krakatau Steel ending in failure when it was finally decided KS is to be privatized through initial public offering.
    
    ArcelorMittal lost strong support after Mr Sofyan Djalil state minister for state enterprises gave in to demand to drop plan to involve strategic alliance with Mittal as the likeliest choice.
    
    Mr Sofyan had repeatedly said that the best way to privatize KS is through involvement of strategic investor and among a number of bidders Mittal came up with the best offer. He hoped that KS could launch IPO in September and sell at least 5% of its shares if the market remains unfavorable.
    
    ArcelorMittal has agreed to be the minority shareholder in PT KS with stake of around 40% and pledged to invest up to USD 10 billion in steel industry in the country.

    ArcelorMittal increases stake in CoAL to 17.8%
    South Africa focused Coal of Africa Limited, formerly GVM Metals, announced that ArcelorMittal has received the Australian regulatory nod to lift its stake in the Australia based firm and would now hold 17.8% stake.
    
    This would take place in a second tranche of shares that the two had agreed on, comprising 13.6 million shares at GBP 1.11 a share. The placement would raise GBP 15.1 million for CoAL. The second tranche is part of the overall AUD 142.7 million placement with ArcelorMittal agreed to in April, which originally paved the way for the global steel company to acquire a 16% stake.
    
    In a note to the JSE, the firm said that Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board had given the deal its approval.
    
    Incorporated in Western Australia and listed in 1980, CoAL is primarily focused on the acquisition, exploration and development of thermal and metallurgical coal projects. CoAL has coal projects and metals processing operations in South Africa. The company's key projects, along with its leading metals processing company NiMag Group (Pty) Ltd are in South Africa.

    Amsterdam (BETTEN FINANCIAL NEWS) - ArcelorMittal koopt Bakermet in Canada, een bedrijf waar restmetaal wordt recycled. Dat heeft 's werelds grootste staalbedrijf maandag bekendgemaakt, zonder financiele details te onthullen.
    
    Bakermet verwerkte afgelopen jaar ongeveer 130.000 short ton ijzerhoudend metaal, en 40.000 pound niet-ijzerhoudend metaal. De fabriek, gevestigd in Ottawa in de staat Ontario, zal leveren aan ArcelorMittals metaalwalserij in Contrecoeur, in de Canadese staat Quebec.

    LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - Africa-focused oil and gas firm Ophir Energy plc on Monday raised 168 million pounds ($331 million) in share placings mostly to investment groups Mittal and Mvelaphanda.
    
    The money will be used to fund exploratory drilling.
    
    Luxembourg's Mittal Investments S.a.r.l., part of a group that includes Arcelor Mittal (ISPA.AS: Quote, Profile, Research) (MT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) (MTP.PA: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's top steel firm, will own 21.2 percent following the placing, unlisted Ophir said in a statement.
    
    South African investment group Mvelaphanda Holdings will own 17.9 percent.
    
    Alternative asset manager Och Ziff will own 13.1 percent.
    
    Ophir said its relationship with Mvelaphanda had helped it build strong connections with key African governments: in net area terms, it is one of the top five holders of deepwater exploration acreage on the continent.
    
    Ophir, which will have an implied market value of 558 million pounds following the capital raising, is not seeking a market listing right now, a spokeswoman said.
    
    "Not to the best of my knowledge," she said when asked if Ophir was considering an initial share sale.

    (tbm) - Amsterdam (BETTEN FINANCIAL NEWS) - ArcelorMittal wil de capaciteit van de Temirtau-productiefaciliteit in Kazachstan verdubbelen van 5 miljoen ton tot 10 miljoen ton. Dat heeft het grootste staalconcern ter wereld dinsdag bekendgemaakt.
    
    ArcelorMittal stelt nauw samen te werken met de overheid van Kazachstan om de uitbreidingsplannen te verwezenlijken. Het project zal vijf tot negen jaar in beslag nemen. Daarnaast wil ArcelorMittal USD 1,2 miljard investeren in de veiligheid en modernisering van de bestaande koolmijnen.

    ArcelorMittal krijgt vergunning ijzerertsmijn India

    Amsterdam (BETTEN FINANCIAL NEWS) - ArcelorMittal heeft een licentie verkregen voor de ijzerertsmijn van Karampada in India. Dat heeft het grootste staalbedrijf van de wereld woensdag bekendgemaakt middels een persbericht.
    
    De mijn ligt in West Singhbhum in het district Jharkhand. De ijzertsmijn beschikt over een geschatte 65 mln ton aan reserves.
    
    Hiermee zal een deel van de ijzerertsbehoefte van 600 mln ton in 30 jaar vervuld kunnen worden van de fabriek die ArcelorMittal gaat bouwen in het district. Eerder maakte het staalconcern bekend dat deze faciliteit een productiecapaciteit van 12 mln ton staal moet krijgen. De investeringen zullen meer dan $ 10 mrd bedragen.

    ArcelorMittal gets iron ore mine lease in Jharkhand
    The Telegraph reported that the mines ministry has awarded a mining lease for an iron ore bearing land spread over 500 hectares at Meghataburu in Jharkhand to ArcelorMittal.
    
    Jharkhand government had recommended ArcelorMittal for the lease at Meghataburu in West Singhbhum earlier this year as ArcelorMittal has promised to set up a 12 million tonne steel mill in Jharkhand in return for the grant of iron ore mines.
    
    ArcelorMittal had earlier been seen trying to acquire a part of the Chiria mining area, which the Jharkhand government has been trying to take away from state owned Steel Authority of India Limited for allocation among private steel makers.
    
    This is the first iron ore mining lease in India for the company, which plans to set up two large steel plants in Jharkhand and Orissa.

    ArcelorMittal: productie 153 miljoen ton in 2012
    BRUSSEL (ANP) - Staalconcern ArcelorMittal verwacht zijn
    productie in 2012 te hebben opgeschroefd tot 153 miljoen ton
    staal per jaar. Dat meldde het bedrijf dinsdag in de aanloop
    naar een beleggersbijeenkomst in Brussel.
    
    In het komende decennium zal de vraag naar staal wereldwijd
    met 3 tot 5 procent groeien. Sinds het jaar 2000 tot nu nam de
    vraag met 7 procent toe tot ruim 1,4 miljard ton staal.
    
    Uit de informatie blijkt verder dat de productie van
    ijzererts in 2012 naar verwachting stijgt tot 110 miljoen ton.
    ArcelorMittal hoopt in 2014-2015 zelfstandig voor 75 tot 85
    procent in de eigen behoefte aan ijzererts te kunnen voorzien.
    Daartoe heeft het recent een aantal mijnen gekocht, onder andere
    in Rusland, en onderzoekt het uitbereidingsmogelijkheden voor
    mijnen in Afrika.

    SYDNEY, June 17 (Reuters) - Australia's Macarthur Coal Ltd (MCC.AX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Tuesday it was still in discussions with potential buyer ArcelorMittal (ISPA.AS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz).
    
    It said in response to media speculation of other potential buyers that it will continue to advise shareholders of any developments.
    
    Arcelor, the world's top steelmaker, has a 15 percent stake in Macarthur and has been holding talks on an unspecified transaction.
    
    The Australian Financial Review newspaper said on Tuesday that Korean steel maker POSCO 0054900.KS may be looking for a stake in Macarthur. It gave no sources.
