   Hagemeyer Shares Rise as Rexel Takeover Speculation Persists

   Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Hagemeyer NV, the world's third-largest electrical equipment supplier, gained for a third day in four as speculation about a takeover by French rival Rexel SA persists.
   
   The stock advanced 14 cents, or 4.5 percent, to 3.28 euros, adding to a 14 percent gain since Sept. 28 and giving a market value of 1.93 billion euros ($2.74 billion). Shares of Naarden, Netherlands-based Hagemeyer jumped 13 percent on Sept. 28 on speculation it may be bought by Rexel, which is based in Paris.
   
   ``Last week, there were already rumors about Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch having a mandate to buy Hagemeyer at 4 euros a share,'' said Rik Zwaneveld, a trader at AFS Brokers BV in Amsterdam who holds shares of Hagemeyer. ``And as usual, Rexel's name pops up again.''
   
   Chief Executive Officer Rudi de Becker has cut jobs and sold consumer-products operations to return Hagemeyer to profit after three years of losses. Rexel, the world's biggest distributor of electrical equipment, raised 1.02 billion euros in a share sale in April and said on May 15 it may spend 250 million euros annually on purchases.
   
   Hagemeyer spokeswoman Emilie de Wolf declined to comment. The volume of shares traded is above average, which may suggest the market thinks a purchase of the company is more than just speculation, according to Zwaneveld.
   
   ``If this was just crying wolf, shares would fall back to earlier levels,'' Zwaneveld said.
