Aust, China may build world's largest solar city

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says talks with the Chinese Government have led to progress on the way both countries are addressing climate change.

China and Australia have agreed to conduct a feasibility study into building the largest solar city in the world in north-east China.

Mr Rudd and Climate Change Minister Penny Wong have spent time touring another joint project - a coal-fired power plant near Beijing.

Mr Rudd says the development of carbon capture and storage technology is important for both nations.

"Australia is the largest coal-exporting country, China is the largest coal-consuming country. We have a particular responsibility to ensure that we advance the overall technical and commercial challenge of clean coal," he said.

Ms Wong has welcomed China's support for a series of climate change initiatives to be funded by the Australian Government.

The projects include work on solar power technology in north-east China and water quality monitoring in the Yellow River.

Ms Wong says she is also pleased China is willing to enter into ongoing talks on climate change.

"One of the things we do know very clearly - and anyone who was in Bali and anyone who has followed the international negotiations subsequently will know this - we know that there is no comprehensive global agreement to tackle climate change, unless China is closely engaged in the climate change issue," she said.

Solar Stocks Shine As Investors Await Quarterly Earnings

The solar energy sector could provide weary investors a ray of sunshine Thursday when market heavyweight SunPower kicks off the industry's quarterly earnings season.

"There's going to be a lot of eyes on them," said Jonathan Hoopes, an analyst with ThinkPanmure.

SunPower (SPWR), with its leading-edge technology, is one of the largest solar stocks by market value and sales. Solid earnings and upbeat guidance for 2008 would lift the entire industry, says John Hardy, an analyst with American Technology Research.

"If they're able to increase their outlook, it's certainly going to have a big effect on the rest of the sector," Hardy said.

Some analysts expect solar companies to report estimates-beating results, thanks to soaring demand and prices for the silicon-based modules that turn sunlight into electricity.

"I'd expect most of the companies to report results that are well ahead of estimates," said Jeff Osborne, an analyst with Thomas Weisel Partners.

After SunPower, other industry leaders to report results include First Solar, Suntech Power Holdings and industry supplier MEMC Electronic Materials.

Solar company shares have rebounded in the past month as investors regain confidence in the industry's long-term viability amid climbing energy prices.

IBD's Energy-Other stock group has jumped 27% in the past month because of surging solar and coal stocks. Many solar stocks are hovering near all-time highs set in 2007.

Solar-energy firms have cashed in as governments around the world, especially Germany and Spain, rush to jump-start the industry. The European Photovoltaic Industry Association says the continent represents about half of the world's solar power capacity.

The U.S. makes up less than 10%.

Countries are subsidizing solar power costs until technology advances and expanded material supplies make solar more naturally competitive with traditional energy sources. That could come as soon as 2012 in some parts of the world, analysts say.

Without government subsidies and tax breaks, the market likely would collapse.

The U.S. Congress late last year failed to renew key solar incentives beyond 2008.

While the U.S. Senate voted this month to extend and expand solar incentives beyond 2008, the outcome isn't certain.

For now, solar-panel makers are seeing huge demand. Hardy estimates the price of solar products rose about 3% to 5% in the first quarter vs. the fourth quarter, giving solar firms a tail wind for first-quarter results.

Higher prices also helped offset the rising cost of polysilicon, the key material used in making solar modules. Polysilicon prices have jumped more than 900% over the past few years.

MEMC, a key polysilicon supplier, warned this month that it wouldn't meet earlier sales projections because of maintenance problems at a new plant that will slow production.

But Osborne says the company should be able to make up for the shortfall by the end of the year -- positioning it well for the ongoing shortage.

First Solar, which likely will announce results in early May, isn't affected by the polysilicon shortage because it uses a different material to produce "thin-film"-based solar modules. It crushed fourth-quarter estimates in February.

SunPower Profit, Sales May Rise to a Record on Solar Demand

    By Christopher Martin

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- SunPower Corp., the second-biggest U.S. solar-cell maker, may report a record profit after rising oil and gas costs increased demand for alternative energy systems from Italy to California.

First-quarter net income probably rose to $12 million, or 14 cents a share, from $1.2 million, or 2 cents, a year earlier, according to the average of 12 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales likely soared 71 percent to $245 million, the data show.

Chief Executive Officer Thomas Werner oversaw the takeover of Italy's Solar Solutions, sold an eight-megawatt panel system in Spain and agreed to supply seven Wal-Mart Stores Inc. sites in California. SunPower, the first publicly traded U.S. solar company to announce results, may be followed by gains at First Solar Inc. and China's Suntech Power Holdings Co.

``SunPower is leading the pack in terms of efficiency and profitability,'' said Kevin Landis, chief investment officer at Firsthand Capital Management in San Francisco, which holds $750 million of investments including Suntech, Trina Solar Ltd. and SunPower's majority owner Cypress Semiconductor Corp. ``The whole industry is deep into a period of significant growth.''

SunPower, based in San Jose, California, has fallen 28 percent this year to $94.42 in Nasdaq composite trading, compared with the 16 percent drop in the PowerShares Global Clean Energy Portfolio. First Solar has gained 7.6 percent and Suntech has tumbled 45 percent.

Record oil and coal costs, as well as concern that increased use of fossil fuels is feeding global warming, have propelled solar power growth by 40 percent a year over the past four years, a pace that analysts expect will continue as manufacturers drive down costs.

    Cutting Costs

Werner plans to reduce the cost of making solar cells 50 percent by 2012 by reducing use of polysilicon, the most expensive component, increasing production, and by making panels easier to install. SunPower, which reports tomorrow, declined to comment before then, said Helen Kendrick, a spokeswoman.

The company says its solar cells are the world's most efficient, converting up to 22 percent of absorbed sunlight into electricity, compared with about 15 percent for standard photovoltaic modules. Germany, SunPower's largest market with about half of 2006 sales, has been losing ground to the U.S. and Spain, analysts say.

``SunPower has a lot of exposure to Spain so their comments on the outlook there will be a very important indicator for the industry,'' said John Hardy, an analyst at American Technology Research in Greenwich, Connecticut. ``We also want to hear what they forecast for Italy, which seems to be southern Europe's heir apparent to Spain.''

    Doubling Output

SunPower plans to more than double output to 250 megawatts this year and exceed 430 megawatts in 2009 with new factories in the Philippines. The company last year raised its ranking among the world's solar cell producers to eighth from 11th, according to industry publisher Prometheus Institute.

``We're looking to see who's got the best polysilicon contracts, because that will tell us who's going to make their growth targets, and who might not,'' Firsthand's Landis said in an interview.

SunPower agreed to a 10-year contract with NorSun AS of Norway on Jan. 16 to purchase enough polysilicon to build 2,500 megawatts of panels.

Phoenix-based First Solar, the largest U.S. solar power manufacturer by market value, is expected to earn $35 million, or 44 cents, in the first quarter, up from $5 million, or 7 cents, a year earlier, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Suntech's first-quarter profit is expected to almost double to $50 million, or 29 cents a share, from $26 million, or 16 cents, a year earlier, the data show.

Evergreen Solar Inc., which reports after the close of trading tomorrow, is expected to have a loss of 7 cents a share, smaller than the 9-cent loss a year earlier.

Solarfun Power Holdings Co., Ltd., a Chinese based company, manufactures photovoltaic (PV) cells and PV modules in China. Although the solar energy industry at this time offers few competitive advantages amongst the large players, Solarfun Power exhibits a huge advantage: because it is a Chinese company, foreign competitors will find an unfriendly environment in China as the Chinese government will be highly protective of its’ businesses making it very difficult for foreigners to enter the Chinese markets outside of joint ventures. This is significant because the China market is huge.

Solarfun Power’s (SOLF) annual revenue for 2007 increased by 280% to $2.4 billion from $630.9 million in 2006. Net income for 2007 increased 40% to $148 million from $105.9 million in 2006.

Chinese stock markets have declined by 50% in recent months presenting tremendous opportunities in selected securities. One such security is Solarfun Power which has declined 65% from a high of $40 to its current price of $13.84. I believe this presents an excellent buying opportunity for long term investors. Despite these rapid growth rates the shares are priced at only 23 times 2007 earnings. The shares trade on the NASDAQ as ADRs. Keep in mind that the Chinese Yuan is being gradually devalued and will ultimately be allowed to float freely against all major international currencies. When this occurs the Chinese Yuan will be one of the world’s strongest currencies so you will also get the added kicker of currency appreciation when investing in Solarfun Power. The 21st Century will belong to China economically and investors need to include some solid Chinese growth companies in their portfolios. Solarfun Power is looking to energize and power China into the 21st Century, why not do the same to your portfolio by adding some Solarfun Power (SOLF) shares today.
