WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--U.S. home builders' confidence in the market took a nosedive in June, according to the results of a monthly index the National Association of Home Builders released Monday.
The association's latest index for sales of new, single-family homes dipped to just 18 in June, matching a record low set in December 2007. The index, which was 19 in May, gauges builders' perceptions of current home sales as well as sales expectations for the next six months.
"The housing economy is hurting," said NAHB Chief Executive Jerry Howard, in a teleconference with reporters.
NAHB has been conducting the survey for more than 20 years. Any number over 50 indicates that more builders view sales conditions as good than poor.
