   KPN joins flat rate data revolt

   Dutch carrier KPN is the latest operator to join the revolt against flat rate data charges and is likely to introduce usage-based tariffs by the end of the year.
   
   Following the publication of the carrier’s first half financial results last week, chief executive Ad Scheepbouwer, said that data would eventually overtake voice in terms of importance and heavy users of mobile data services would have to be charged for their usage.
   
   Calling the introduction of tiered pricing a return to sanity, Scheepbouwer said that KPN had experienced a strong increase in data users on its Dutch and German networks to the point where “mobile data is becoming a mass market service”. As a result the uptake of smartphones and applications have resulted in an exponential growth in data and signalling traffic with continued investments in capacity required as well as further improvements in active traffic controls to effectively manage the network.

   TomTom heeft een Negatief advies voor de korte termijn (rend: 7.2%) sinds 29-06-2010. Dinsdag werd een slotkoers van EUR 4.893 bereikt na een stijging van 4.5%. De koers steeg 2.7% over de afgelopen 5 dagen.
   Nadat de rechthoektopformatie bij EUR 4.956 neerwaarts werd doorbroken ging het huidige negatieve advies van start.
   
   Er is sprake van een opwaartse correctie na de vorming van een hogere koersbodem. Een gelijke koerstop op EUR 5.04 is noodzakelijk om het huidige advies in stand te houden. Mogelijk gaat deze situatie over in een continuatiepatroon. Slechts bij een overtuigende uitbraak boven dit niveau (rode lijn) wordt het advies verhoogd.
   De indicatoren voor de korte termijn van TomTom wijzen per saldo op een neerwaartse trend (MACD<0, MA50 daalt) maar met een positief momentum (MACD boven signaallijn, signaallijn Stochastics stijgt).
   
   Dit geeft aan dat er sprake is van een opwaartse correctie in de dalende trend.
   
   Met een RXL Rapportcijfer van 2.6 scoort TomTom zwakker dan een gemiddeld fonds en ook zwakker dan de AEX-index.

   Tele Atlas bets big on 3G services in India
   
   The company expects high demand for digital maps, dynamic content, navigation applications, location-based services and portable navigation devices with the roll out of 3G services in India
   
   MUMBAI, INDIA: Tele Atlas, the provider of digital maps and dynamic content globally, is expecting a growth in its business with the launch of 3G services by telcos in India.
   
   “In India, we are working on marketing strategies and acquiring number of clients and helping them to create an ecosystem of navigation and location-based services. We are trying to create global experience and platform into India and once the 3G is launched the market will grow,” said Rajiv Chandra, Tele Atlas' director - sales and marketing for Asia Pacific Consumer Market.
   
   According to Chandra, the networks available in India are not so powerful compared to other regions due to the lack of GPS (Global Positing System), and as a result the telcos use the Cell ID approach and use SMS (short messaging service) with the local base stations rather than voice-based navigation applications.
   
   While in India, the use of digital maps and navigation applications and systems still remain very new to most users. “There's high level of network congestions due to the number of users; however, it would be better to use voice navigation applications as it is a new experience for users in India,” Chandra commented.
   
   As telcos are facing the pressure from decreasing ARPUs (average revenue per users); they expect the launch of 3G services would help improve their revenue margins in the form of various new valued-added services (VAS), which also include the navigation- and location-based services.
   
   Moreover, Chandra observed that India has a heterogeneous environment compared to other countries as different technologies are used by operators and also in those countries the operators have higher ARPUs due to high disposable incomes and so the adoption rate of VAS is higher.
   
   In terms of technology, all the premium handsets support the digital mapping and navigation systems using the GPS technology. In addition, portable navigation devices (PNDs) and and mobile devices are largely supported by GPS-based applications.
   
   Apart from the operators, Tele Atlas works directly with the leading mobile phone brands including HTC, Acer, Apple, Samsung, LG, Google and others. Google is the biggest customer for the company and has around 40-50 clients in the APAC region while in India it has about 10-15 clients.
   
   The company earns about 75 per cent revenue from PNDs and mobile phone devices, while 25 per cent share comes from selling applications to other firms which are used for white labellings.
   
   In India, the company has signed a definite agreement with Pune-based Kalyani Group in 2008 to acquire substantial equity stake in Kalyani Net Venture Limited (KNVL).
   
   Tele Atlas is a licensing business unit of TomTom N.V, which is a digital mapping and routing company that focuses on car navigation and also is the market leader in PNDs.

    MUMBAI (AFN) - De autoverkopen in India zijn in juli met bijna 40 procent gestegen. Steeds meer Indiërs kopen auto's nu de lonen in het land stijgen en de bevolking gemakkelijker toegang krijgt tot leningen.
    
    De autoverkopen in de op twee na grootste automarkt in het Verre Oosten namen in juli toe tot 158.764 van 115.084 in dezelfde periode een jaar geleden. Truckverkopen dikten met 37 procent aan tot 51.481 stuks, zo bleek maandag uit data van de Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
    
    Analisten voorspellen dat de sterke verkoopcijfers de komende maanden wat zullen afvlakken. Dat komt door de hogere benzineprijzen en stijgende rentes op leningen.

    HONGKONG (AFN) - De autoverkopen in China, de grootste automarkt ter wereld, zijn in juli minder hard gegroeid dan de voorgaande maand. In totaal stegen de verkopen vorige maand met 14,4 procent op jaarbasis tot 1,24 miljoen stuks. Dat maakte brancheorganisatie China Association of Automobile Manufacturers maandag bekend.
    
    Het is de vierde maand op rij dat de groei afzwakt sinds het record in maart van 1,74 miljoen auto's. De sector kan niet meer profiteren van stimuleringsmaatregelen van de Chinese overheid. Ook worden er minder auto's verkocht, omdat de groei van de Chinese economie is afgenomen.

    NEW DELHI (AFN) - Enkele dagen nadat een verbod op de Blackberry in Saudi-Arabië werd afgewend, dreigt India moeilijk te gaan doen over de smartphone, omdat de berichten niet te ontcijferen zijn door de veiligheidsdiensten. Dit meldde dinsdag de Hindustan Times.
    
    De Blackberry maakt in tegenstelling tot de concurrerende producten van onder meer Apple en Nokia gebruik van een eigen netwerk, dat vanuit vestigingen in Canada en het Verenigd koninkrijk in de lucht wordt gehouden.
