   TomTom biedt een toegankelijk en simpel navigatiesysteem met de lancering van de TomTom Start2 Amsterdam, 30 maart 2010 - TomTom zet autonavigatie in een hogere versnelling met de lancering van de TomTom Start2, een nieuw navigatiesysteem dat autorijden nog minder stressvol maakt. Een van de nieuwe functies van de Start is de uitgebreide rijbaanaanduiding die ingewikkelde knooppunten overzichtelijk maakt. Deze functie geeft alle rijbanen duidelijk weer op het navigatiesysteem en verwijst de bestuurder naar de juiste baan en helpt daarmee navigeren eenvoudig en stressvrij te maken. Ook is het navigatieapparaat uitgerust met een ingesproken straatnamenfunctie. Omdat de ingevoerde straatnaam nu ook hardop uitgesproken wordt, kunnen bestuurders hun ogen nog meer op de weg houden en tegelijkertijd zeker zijn van hun locatie. De TomTom Start2 is volledig compatibel met RDS-TMC Traffic*. Deze

   Personal Navigation Device manufacturer TomTom has announced today the availability of a range of products (across the TomTom XL and TomTom XXL lines) offering Lifetime Map Updates and Lifetime Traffic Updates. Pricing starts at $200 and varies by model.
   
   “The nation's roads are changing every day, so TomTom is proud to offer Lifetime Map Updates on our portable navigation devices,” said Tom Murray, vice president of market development for TomTom Inc. “This feature, in conjunction with TomTom’s Lifetime Traffic Updates, offers our customers the assurance that they will always have the industry’s most accurate maps and the real-time traffic information they need for hassle-free navigation.”

   PARIS -(Dow Jones)- French carmaker Renault SA (RNO.FR) and Spanish renewable energy group Acciona SA (ANA.MC) said Tuesday they plan to cooperate in the Spanish market for electric cars.
   "According to the terms of the agreement, Acciona will bring its capacity to develop an intelligent charging network, provide associated services and supply electricity produced from renewable sources," the companies said in a statement.
   "This implementation will be done in coordination with the forecasts of the Renault-Nissan Alliance for the commercialization of electric vehicles," they added.
   Renault and its 44%-owned affiliate Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.(NSANY) will ensure the network is compatible with electric vehicles and their navigation systems so that available charging points can be identified. The charging system will be included in the commercial offering together with the vehicles.
   "In this manner, and as a result of the agreement, the parties will join forces to form an Electric Mobility Operator," the companies said.

   Mio Cuts Staff in Europe
   
   Personal Navigation Device (PND) manufacturer Mio has recently fired their local marketing representatives in Europe (except Germany) as well as the entire sales office for the Nordics countries learned GPS Business News. It seems only three people are left to cater to marketing activities in Western Europe.
   
   While the company claimed 18.3 percent market share (including Mio, Navman and Magellan brands) worldwide for the whole year 2009, a recent study by Canalys (read here) shows that this market share has been shrinking to 10 percent in the fourth quarter. European market share was also 10 percent in that quarter.
   
   Unlike TomTom, Garmin or Navigon, who developed a strategy and increased their investments in mobile and automotive platforms - to offset the current decline in the PND market - Mio has not demonstrated anything like that. The only move in the mobile arena was to launch a Magellan-branded iPhone application (powered by Nav n Go) in the United States.
   
   Instead of offering connected PNDs like their competitors, Mio has chosen to differentiate their product range by including multimedia features such as mobile TV. While mobile TV is in high demand, not offering connected services makes Mio far less competitive in the navigation space.
   
   Mio also recently launched a new device at the CeBIT trade show in Hannover (read here) that is alltogether a PND, a mobile TV and a media tablet offering web and email. It is however difficult to see how Mio will be able compete in this new arena against Apple and others with little brand recognition outside of the PND market and few marketing staff left to make it happen.
   
   In the outdoor market, the acquisition of Magellan by Mio's parent company MiTAC raised hope that a range of GPS handhelds would be marketed in Europe. But so far nothing has happened in that area as well.
   
   In neglecting their marketing Mio and parent company MiTAC are being step by step wiped out of the European consumer GPS market.

   ArtikelTomTom heeft bekendgemaakt dat het in Amerika lifetime updates voor kaarten zal gaan leveren bij navigators van de producent die meer dan 200 dollar kosten. Europa moet het vooralsnog doen met betaalde updates voor haar kaarten.
   TomTom heeft in Amerika een nieuwe service aangekondigd voor haar navigators. De producent geeft bij PND's die duurder dan 200 dollar zijn voortaan levenslang gratis updates voor de kaarten. Daarnaast is de producent van plan om ook gratis verkeers-updates erbij te gaan geven bij de mid-range modellen en de high-end modellen. TomTom is in Amerika een hevige concurrentiestrijd verwikkeld met Garmin en beide producenten strijden om de gunst van de consument. Aangezien de Europese markt al redelijk verzadigd is als het gaat om navigators heeft TomTom haar pijlen gericht op Amerika en met deze extra services wil de producent graag consumenten overhalen om haar producten te kopen.
   
   De kans is klein dat TomTom ook deze service in Europa gaat voeren aangezien TomTom hier al heer en meester is in de branche. Desondanks verkeert de producent in zwaar weer sinds Nokia en Google met gratis navigatie oplossingen zijn gekomen voor hun telefoons. In april geeft TomTom een persconferentie waarin het nieuwe producenten en eventueel diensten zal gaan aankondigen. All About Phones zal hierbij aanwezig zijn.

    Novum) - Een ruime meerderheid van de deelnemers aan de ANWB-peiling over de kilometerheffing is voorstander van een vorm van rekeningrijden. Van de 440 duizend leden en niet-leden die de enquête invulden, gaat 68 procent akkoord met de vervanging van de wegenbelasting door een gebruiksafhankelijke heffing.
    
    De deelnemers hoefden geen ja of nee te zeggen, maar kregen verschillende stellingen voorgelegd. Daaruit bleek onder meer dat de meeste mensen het redelijk vinden als voor een schonere auto minder hoeft te worden betaald.
    
    Het kastje in de auto dat het gebruik bijhoudt, wordt echter afgewezen. Dat geldt ook voor een apart spitstarief, dat volgens leden onrechtvaardig en ineffectief is omdat automobilisten vaak geen keus zeggen te hebben voor het rijden in de spits.
    
    De enquête was al snel beladen omdat verkeersminister Camiel Eurlings (CDA) aangaf de aanbevelingen van de ANWB-leden over te nemen. De minister werd onder meer verweten ondemocratisch te handelen door alleen te luisteren naar de ANWB-leden en de Tweede Kamer buitenspel te zetten. Later slikte Eurlings zijn woorden deels in. De ANWB stelde de enquête ook open voor niet-leden.
    
    De ANWB noemt de uitkomsten van de peiling zeer waardevol, ondanks dat de kilometerheffing onzeker is sinds de val van het kabinet. De politici die zich er na de verkiezingen over gaan buigen, kunnen er volgens de belangenvereniging hun voordeel mee doen.

Speerpunt zal de nieuwe tabletcomputer iPad zijn, zo maakte Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers duidelijk.
    
    De durfkapitalist zette in 2008 al een fonds van 100 miljoen dollar op voor de iPhone en de iPod Touch. Inmiddels is de kas leeg, in totaal hebben veertien bedrijven geld gekregen uit het iFund. Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers verdubbelt nu de omvang van het fonds.
    
    De iPad, een kruising tussen een smartphone en een laptop, is vanaf zaterdag op de Amerikaanse markt.     Our analysis: We realize that Garmin is still predominantly using Navteq products, both for its PND products as well as its Nuvi-phone as the maps for Western-Europe and North America are Navteq maps.
    However, the fact that Garmin has opted for a Tele Atlas map in Singapore and Malaysia (2 major cities in South East Asia) is a clear sign that Garmin is evaluating Tele Atlas' maps despite the long term contract that the company has in place with Mavteq. As such, this could be an indication that Tele Atlas may be winning more business from Garmin the future.
    We are not saying that Garmin will switch from Navteq to Tele Atlas for the two main regions (Europe and North America) but now that it is working with Tele Atlas maps, changing supplies has become easier because it has experience with the procedures and standards.
    
    Conclusion & Action: The fact that Tele Atlas is providing maps to Garmin is a positive development as it shows that Garmin is willing to look for an alternative for Navteq if the quality and the price is right. That may lead to additional sales for Tele Atlas even if the current deal is immaterial from a financial point of view.

    Auriga Systems, the UK-based Data Despatch supplier for taxi and private hire companies, has signed its first system contract in Portugal, signalling the beginning of its planned expansion into the Portuguese taxi market.
    
    A 100-vehicle taxi fleet in the Algarve region has chosen Auriga's Evocab system to manage its operations. The drivers require a sophisticated Data Despatch system to handle the high number of jobs through the summer season, and have chosen Auriga.
    
    The system is planned to be live in time for the summer, and will consist of an Evocab Data Despatch office system with automatic phone and Internet booking, as well as ‘Callback’, to let customers know when their taxi is arriving to pick them up. The vehicles will be kitted out with Auriga’s CT4000s communicating via GPRS, with fully integrated TomTom satellite navigation, and the 'Out of Car' feature to allow drivers to leave the vehicle without missing out on work.
    
    This system installation represents the first stage in Auriga’s planned expansion into the Portuguese taxi market.

    TomTom heeft een nieuwe uitvoering van de Start uitgebracht, de Start2. Het navigatiesysteem is, net als de eerste Start, een instapmodel met 3,5 inch scherm en vereenvoudigd menu. Het apparaat toont bij het opstarten slechts de menuopties Plan route en Bekijk kaart. Er zijn in vergelijking met de Start wel twee aantrekkelijke features aan toegevoegd: het apparaat leest straatnamen voor en heeft een uitgebreide rijbaanaanduiding, zodat u ziet welke rijbaan u moet volgen.
    De Start2 Benelux is vanaf heden verkrijgbaar voor €129,95. De Europese versie kost €159,95. Dankzij los verkrijgbare covers kunt u het apparaat gemakkelijk een andere kleur geven. Deze StartSkins zijn er in de kleuren Flaming red, Ice Blue, Electric Green, Deep Purple, Sunburst Yellow en Flaming Orange (€14,95 per stuk). Een draagtasje kost €19,95.     Garmin heeft al een tijdje een nederlandse stem met straatnaam uitspraak,niets nieuws in navigatieland dus. Wel grappig hoe de straatnamen in het buitenland worden uitgesproken.
