ATHENS -(Dow Jones)- Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said Tuesday that he has appointed former Italy treasury minister Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa as an economic policy advisor.
"Padoa-Scioppa will advise the Prime Minister on matters of political strategy that pertain to the implementation of economic plans, public finances and restructuring policy, in the framework of the European support mechanism," the prime minister's office said in a statement.
The cash strapped Greek state in May agreed to adopt unprecedented austerity measures and tough reforms in exchange for a EUR110 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union.
Padoa-Schioppa is also expected to advise Papandreou "on macroeconomics, taxation, banking and debt management matters" under the EU and IMF framework.
In July, Padoa-Schioppa assumed the chairmanship of the trustees of the International Accounting Standards Committee Foundation.
He is also president of Notre Europe, a Paris-based think-tank that focuses on European unity, and a former member of the European Central Bank's executive board.
