    Australië vreest diepste recessie ooit door coronacrisis

    SYDNEY (AFN/RTR) - Australië zal in de eerste helft van dit jaar naar verwachting in de diepste recessie ooit belanden als gevolg van de coronacrisis. Dat maakte de Australische centrale bank bekend. De Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) vreest voor een krimp met 10 procent in de eerste zes maanden van dit jaar. Voor heel 2020 wordt een daling met 6 procent voorspeld.

    Het zou de eerste recessie in Australië zijn in drie decennia. Om de virusuitbraak te lijf te gaan heeft de Australische overheid de grenzen gesloten en strikte beperkende maatregelen voor het publiek ingevoerd. Veel bedrijven zijn gesloten en personeel wordt massaal op straat gezet. De werkloosheid gaat waarschijnlijk pieken op 10 procent. Inmiddels wordt gewerkt aan plannen om de maatregelen te versoepelen.

    Om de negatieve impact van de crisis op de economie te verzachten heeft de RBA de rente verlaagd naar het laagste niveau ooit en een reeks steunmaatregelen aangekondigd.
