MARKET REPORT: KPN shares rise amid rumors of a potential cash bid from tycoon Carlos Slim
21:48 GMT, 22 May 2013
Many professional punters were nursing burnt fingers recently when a takeover bid for KPN failed to materialise.
Instead, Holland’s biggest telecoms group announced a heavily discounted €3billion rights issue to bolster its balance sheet and the shares tanked.
However, those who held their nerve and did not sprint for the exit could yet be rewarded.
Rumours were rife on Wednesday, as KPN’s shares moved up to €1.64, that major shareholder Carlos Slim, one of the richest men in the world who owns Mexican telecoms group America Movil, is lining up a cash bid north of €3 a share. Remember, he first paid €7-plus a share for his KPN
Slim installed two of his America Movil executives on the board of KPN in the wake of the rights issue, and now that KPN’s balance sheet has been propped up in the face of tough competition in its home mobile market and elsewhere, Slim is ready to pounce. He already has a big say on KPN’s strategy going forward.
There is every chance that should Slim decide to make a move on KPN, that would alert both BT, 0.8p easier at 321.5p, and Vodafone, 3.1p off at 196.8p, to the possibility of launching a counter-offer.
