Private equity looks to connect with European telecoms

Reports in The Sunday Times last June and the Financial Times in February this year said some preliminary talks had been held regarding a potential mega-buyout deal for mobile network provider Everything Everywhere, the 50:50 joint venture between Deutsche Telekom and France Télécom. Firms that were linked with a potential £8bn to £10bn offer included Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Apax Partners, Blackstone Group and CVC Capital Partners, although all declined to comment at the time and people close to the situation played down the possibility of such a deal.
But senior private equity executives are looking towards the opportunities that a single European telecoms market could provide. The European Commission is working on such a proposal and is expected to publish a blueprint in June, according to reports. Areas under consideration include the creation of a single cross-border regulatory environment, an enhanced ability to conduct mergers across territories and potential harmonised rules on areas such as mobile spectrum and roaming fees.
