For many companies, cost would be a major factor in their decision to acquire a mapping service as detailed as Nokia’s HERE. The alternate scenario of creating their own mapping service from scratch would require sending out a fleet of cars on roads worldwide to gather data. This would include the extensive costs of building the technology, which would not only be difficult to navigate and maintain, but would also be time consuming.
It is paramount for car companies such as the German consortium and car-dependent taxi-hailing services like Uber to have access to reliable and accurate mapping data, as the information is key to their business goals.
It appears that the best deal that Uber can now get is a nod by the German car consortium to become a partner and help finance the project and gain access to a mapping technology that will allow it to have information of navigation globally. This way, Baidu will not have to foot the bill in its entirety, and will get the required data even it means sharing it with other companies.
