   Two Republicans, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, have said they do not support efforts to bring a nomination to a vote. That leaves McConnell with a 51-49 majority – enough to get the confirmation through. One more defection would produce a tie that would be broken by the vice-president, Mike Pence. Two more would sink the effort.
   
   Democrats had hoped to get similar support from Cory Gardner, the senator for Colorado, who faces a tough re-election race in Colorado, and the Iowa senator, Chuck Grassley. But both men said on Monday they would vote to confirm a qualified Trump pick.
   
   The Republican senator Mitt Romney, who has clashed with Trump and is seen by Democrats as a potential holdout, avoided questions about the supreme court seat on Monday.
   
   “Before I have any comment, I’m going to meet with my colleagues, which I’ll be doing tomorrow,” Romney, the party’s 2012 presidential nominee, told reporters.
   
   Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, the Republican chairman of the Senate judiciary committee, told Fox News late on Monday: “We’ve got the votes to confirm Justice Ginsburg’s replacement before the election. We’re going to move forward in the committee. We’re going to report the nomination out of the committee to the floor of the United States Senate so we can vote before the election.”

   Shortly after Congress passed the Cares Act, the Pentagon began directing pandemic-related money to defense contractors
   
   A $1 billion fund Congress gave the Pentagon in March to build up the country’s supplies of medical equipment has instead been mostly funneled to defense contractors and used for making things such as jet engine parts, body armor and dress uniforms.
   
   The change illustrates how one taxpayer-backed effort to battle the novel coronavirus, which has killed roughly 200,000 Americans, was instead diverted toward patching up long-standing perceived gaps in military supplies.
   
   The Cares Act, which Congress passed earlier this year, gave the Pentagon money to “prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus.” But a few weeks later, the Defense Department began reshaping how it would award the money in a way that represented a major departure from Congress’s original intent.

   Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg and his team have raised more than $16 million to pay the court fines and fees of nearly 32,000 Black and Hispanic Florida voters with felony convictions, an effort aimed at boosting turnout for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.
   
   The money will go to fund a program organized by the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition to pay the fines, fees and restitution costs for former prisoners who are already registered to vote in Florida but barred by law from participating in the election because of those outstanding debts.
   
   Bloomberg, who has committed at least $100 million to electing Biden in the state, raised the money from individuals and foundations over the last week, his advisers said.    A new poll conducted for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution shows the presidential race in Georgia could not be closer, with President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden tied in a political environment dominated by the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic as well as protests over racial inequality.
   
   The poll pegged Trump and Biden at 47% apiece, with an additional 1% of voters backing Libertarian Jo Jorgensen. Only 4% were undecided in the survey of 1,150 likely voters, which was conducted Sept. 11-20 by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs.
   
   Georgia’s twin U.S. Senate races are also competitive. U.S. Sen. David Perdue (47%) and Democrat Jon Ossoff (45%) are neck-and-neck, within the poll’s margin of error of 4 percentage points. Libertarian Shane Hazel has 4% support, and about 5% are undecided.

   It's a dead heat in Iowa as a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden locked in a tie just six weeks to Election Day.
   
   Forty-seven percent of likely voters say they would support Trump for president, and 47% say they would support Biden. Another 4% would vote for someone else and 3% are unsure.
   
   A stark gender divide appears to be driving the race as men of nearly every demographic cast their support for Trump, a Republican, and women do the same for Biden, a Democrat.

   With just over six weeks to Election Day, the new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows Greenfield leading 45% to 42% among likely voters. Another 3% say they would vote for someone else, 2% say they would not vote in the race and 7% are unsure.
   
   Despite heavy campaigning and millions spent on television ads, the results are largely unchanged since June, when Greenfield led Ernst 46% to 43%.

   Mueller report/investigation, boek van Andrew Weismann:
   
   Mr. Manafort had worked for pro-Russian interests in Ukraine, and the investigation uncovered ties by his business partner, Konstantin V. Kilimnik, to Russian intelligence. The book builds toward investigators’ discovery that Mr. Manafort had shared internal campaign polling data with Mr. Kilimnik, who flew to the United States to meet with Mr. Manafort during the campaign, asking whether Mr. Trump would permit a peace plan for Russia to essentially take over all of eastern Ukraine.
   
   But while admitting this much, Mr. Manafort — seeing the dangle of a potential pardon from Mr. Trump — refused to cooperate further. Investigators did not obtain any final puzzle pieces and lacked the evidence to charge anyone in the campaign with a criminal conspiracy involving Russia’s covert electoral assistance.
   
   “It would seem to require significant audacity — or else, leverage — for another nation to even put such a request before a presidential candidate,” Mr. Weissmann wrote of Mr. Kilimnik’s request. “This made what we didn’t know, and still don’t know to this day, monumentally disconcerting: Namely, why would Trump ever agree to this? Why would Trump ever agree to this Russian proposal if the candidate were not getting something from Russia in return?”
   
   Mr. Weissmann explained the significance of Mr. Manafort’s interactions with Mr. Kilimnik — also a major focus of a recent bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report, which explicitly labeled Mr. Kilimnik a Russian intelligence agent — more clearly than the Mueller report did.

   Mr. Weissmann also criticized colleagues, portraying the special counsel team as divided between aggressive investigators like him, the F.B.I. special agent Omer Meisel and the prosecutor Jeannie Rhee — who headed “Team R,” which investigated Russian issues other than those centered on Manafort — and far more risk-averse law enforcement officials like Mr. Zebley who pulled punches.
   
   In one episode in 2017, the Mueller team issued subpoenas to Deutsche Bank for information about Mr. Manafort’s income in Ukraine. Deutsche Bank had also lent large sums to the Trump Organization, and the White House somehow found out about the still-secret subpoenas — though not their focus. The White House demanded to know what investigators were doing, and Mr. Mueller authorized Mr. Zebley to tell the White House that they had not been seeking Mr. Trump’s financial information.
   
   “At that point, any financial investigation of Trump was put on hold,” Mr. Weissmann writes. “That is, we backed down — the issue was simply too incendiary; the risk, too severe.”
   
   The book provides many other examples of concessions large and small. Investigators did not try to question Mr. Trump’s daughter Ivanka — who had spoken in the lobby to a delegation of Russians who came to Trump Tower in June 2016 to meet with campaign leaders who had been promised that they were offering dirt on Hillary Clinton from the Russian government.
   
   They “feared that hauling her in for an interview would play badly to the already antagonistic right-wing press — look how they’re roughing up the president’s daughter — and risk enraging Trump, provoking him to shut down the special counsel’s office once and for all,” he wrote.
   
   Similarly, they did not subpoena the Trump Organization for emails about its efforts to develop a Trump-branded building in Moscow, which were active deep into the 2016 campaign.
   
   And they did not immunize Mr. Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr., a step that would have prevented him from being able to invoke the Fifth Amendment to avoid testifying about matters like the Trump Tower meeting. Bound by grand-jury secrecy rules, Mr. Weissmann did not come out and say whether Donald Trump Jr. was threatened with or actually issued a subpoena and used his right against self-incrimination to repel it.
   
   Mr. Weissmann laid much of the blame for what he saw as a pattern of timidity on Mr. Zebley, portraying him as a primary decision maker. “Repeatedly during our 22 months in operation, we would reach some critical juncture in our investigation only to have Aaron say that we could not take a particular action because it risked aggravating the president beyond some undefined breaking point.”

   Slechts twee jaar geleden gooide de Republikeinse senator Susan Collins haar reputatie, haar nalatenschap en haar ziel weg door Brett Kavanaugh te bevestigen. Ze geloofde dat ze door dit te doen zichzelf zo in de gunst zou komen bij Donald Trump en zijn basis tot het punt dat ze hoe dan ook herkozen zou worden.
   
   Nu verliest Collins haar herverkiezingsbod met maar liefst twaalf punten, want het blijkt dat mensen vaak lange herinneringen hebben als je een mentaal onstabiele meineed en verkrachter voor het Hooggerechtshof plaatst. In het weekend maakte Collins de wanhopige stap om lauw haar tegenstanders aan te kondigen om verder te gaan met het huidige benoemingsproces van het Hooggerechtshof. Omdat ze Trump de vorige keer heeft geholpen, verliest ze nu zo erg dat ze zich lichtjes tegen hem moet verzetten. Voor haar moeite valt Trump haar nu openlijk aan.
   
   Trump dringt erop aan dat kiezers "het niet zullen accepteren" en dat ze Susan Collins zullen straffen omdat ze haar verzet tegen het voortzetten van het nominatieproces durfde uiten. Hij staat erop dat ze hierdoor "zeer ernstig gewond" zal raken. Met andere woorden, Trump zegt zijn aanhangers dat ze niet de moeite moeten nemen om op Collins te stemmen.
   
   Donald Trump probeert duidelijk een voorbeeld te stellen aan Susan Collins, in de hoop te voorkomen dat andere Republikeinse senatoren overlopen. Hij probeert de boodschap te sturen dat als ze dat doen, hij ze zal aanvallen. Maar de boodschap die hij echt verzendt, is dat zelfs als het gaat om iemand die zo corrupt loyaal is als Collins, hij in ruil daarvoor geen loyaliteit te bieden heeft. De andere GOP-senatoren zouden dit moeten opvatten als een duidelijk signaal dat hij ook niet achter hun rug zal staan, wat ze ook doen. Trump zal binnenkort weg zijn, en elke Republikein in functie zal zich moeten verantwoorden voor het Trump-tijdperk. Hoeveel van hen willen met hem mee?

    Romney zegt zojuist dat hij geen probleem heeft een SC rechter aan te stellen vlak voor een verkiezing.
    
    Waarmee de weg vrij is voor Collins, Murkowski en nog 1 andere om tegen te stemmen, en tegen hun achterban te zeggen dat ze best wel onafhankelijk zijn.
    
    Hopelijk doen ze dat nog voor nov 3.

    Ergens wel te begrijpen dat de GOP een eigen rechter voor de verkiezingen willen hebben. Stel dat Biden wordt gekozen, en dat ze het huis en de senaat winnen, en een rechter voor het leven kunnen kiezen. Dan zijn de REP en GOP compleet vleugellam. En met de nieuwe rechter kan Donald weer via hooggerechtshof rechtszaak na rechtszaak uitstellen wat hij zijn leven lang al doet.

    Ik dacht dat er 4 van de REP moeten tegen stemmen, 53 van de 100 zitten bij de REP. Als de stand 50/50 wordt dan dacht ik dat de stem van Pence de doorslag gaf??????

    Klopt, dus als 3 Republikeinen tegenstemmen is er nog niks aan de hand, dus kunnen ze doen alsof ze "principieel" zijn geweest. Pas bij 4 tegenstemmen gaat het niet door. Maar het is ook niet onmogelijk dat een Democraat als Manchin "voor" zal stemmen.
    
    Dat Romney akkoord gaat had ik niet verwacht, maar ja, hoewel hij wat moeite heeft met Trump blijft hij een Republikein.

    Hearings in de komende weken maken het onmogelijk voor Graham en andere GOP senatoren te campaignen. Hun (nog) niet verkozen tegenstanders hebben daar geenlast van. En terwijl het land kan zien wie de heren/dames van de GOP in het SC willen hebben, laten de heren en dames van de Dem partij een alternatief zen. U wilt abortus verbieden? U wilt gezondheidszorg stoppen?
    
    Dat gaat er bij de grote meerderheid in als koek, denk je?
    
    Dus gaan er meer mensen stemmen dan ooit tevoren, en verliezen de republikeinen de senaat. En dan staat er volgend jaar een trifecta in DC, die de rotzooi die de GOP heeft achtergelaten kan opruimen zonder de rechtse sociopaten en religieuze idioten.

    Van Romney had ik het inderdaad ook niet verwacht.
    
    Maar Donald en de Republikeinen kunnen niet slecht zijn.
    Ik heb zelf foto's gezien in het wittehuis dat Donald en de witte GOP mannen en mannelijke kerkleiders elkanders hand vast hebben met ogen dicht en bidden naar GOD.

    Amerika is wel zo enorm groot vergeleken met Nederland, en er leven miljoenen Amerikanen in gebieden waar de tijd stil staat en bijna geen nieuws door dringt . Alleen sensatie verhaaltjes over buren en familie en zondags naar de kerk.
