   Bij de tot nu toe grootste ruil van krijgsgevangenen sinds de Russische invasie zijn 144 Oekraïense soldaten vrijgekomen, meldt Oekraïne. Het gaat onder anderen om 95 "verdedigers" van het fel bevochten Azovstal-fabriekscomplex in de Zuid-Oekraïense havenstad Marioepol.
   
   Een groot deel van de vrijgelaten soldaten is gewond, aldus Oekraïense media.
   
   Azovstal was het laatste stuk Marioepol in handen van de Oekraïners. Na een langdurige strijd delfden zij het onderspit en konden Russen en pro-Russische strijders de hele stad innemen.

   De nieuwe taakomschrijving voor de NAVO wordt als vanouds gedomineerd door de dreiging van Rusland en hoe die te pareren. Maar het nieuwe zogeheten 'strategisch concept' noemt voor het eerst ook China als bron van zorg.
   
   De NAVO neemt uitdrukkelijk afstand van de gedachte dat Rusland een partner kan zijn, een gedachte die zij twaalf jaar geleden nog koesterde. ,,Gezien Ruslands vijandige beleid en daden" kan dat niet langer, staat in het document. Het land is juist de "ernstigste en meest rechtstreekse bedreiging" voor de veiligheid van de westerse militaire alliantie.
   
   Rusland mag door de oorlog in Oekraïne opnieuw veel aandacht trekken, ook China "daagt onze belangen, veiligheid en waarden uit", aldus het strategisch concept. Het noemt China's zucht naar een ijzeren greep op belangrijke technologie en grondstoffen. Maar China maakt zich ook schuldig aan cyberaanvallen, zoekt ruzie en verspreidt desinformatie. Tot dusver repte het document nooit over de Aziatische wereldmacht.
   
   Niettemin hadden de Verenigde Staten liever veel scherpere bewoordingen gebruikt voor de gevreesde rivaal van vandaag en morgen. Maar NAVO-landen als Duitsland springen vanouds voorzichtiger met China om. Nederland staat in deze kwestie dichter bij de VS, zeggen NAVO-bronnen.

   If confirmed, his death was one of the first from the new 43-mile-range weapons sent to Ukraine by President Joe Biden.
   
   Vasilyev was reportedly in an advanced command post of the Russian army’s airborne assault troops, but the location was not specified.
   
   He was commander of the 137th Guards Airborne Regiment of the 106th Guards Airborne Division, based in Ryazan.
   
   Married with a daughter, he had been awarded the Russian Order of Courage on other honours.

    MOSCOW (AP) — As the ruble strengthens to levels not seen in seven years, Russia’s minister of economic development warned Wednesday that the country’s businesses could suffer if the trend persists.
    
    The ruble hit all-time lows in the first weeks after Russia sent troops into Ukraine in late February, dropping as much as 50%, to 150 against the U.S. dollar. It then began recovering, and this month has reached its highest exchange rate since May 2015.
    
    The Russian Central Bank’s official exchange rate Wednesday was 52.9 to the dollar. Although the rate is seen by some as a sign that Russia is weathering Western sanctions, the strong ruble makes Russian exports more expensive.
    
    “I think my colleagues will confirm that the profitability of many industries, even export-oriented, has become negative at the current exchange rate,” economic development minister Maxim Reshetnikov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.
    
    “If such a situation will last for several more months, I think many enterprises may come to the idea not only of curtailing investment processes, but also of the need to adjust current production plans and reduce production volumes,” he said.
    
    Central Bank head Elvira Nabiullina this month suggested that Russia should broadly reorient its economy away from relying on revenue from exports.
    
    Analysts say the ruble’s strength reflects high global prices for oil and natural gas and that wide-ranging sanctions mean Russia is buying fewer imports.

    Dan verdiep je je maar eens in de autoprijzen in NL. Ms wat luxer maar voor velen niet te betalen vandaar
    de opkomst van private leasing!

    De Duitse regering heeft de controle over drie schepen voor vloeibaar gemaakt aardgas overgenomen van de Russische energiegigant Gazprom.
    
    Het in de VS genoteerde Dynagas LNG Partners zei dat de Duitse toezichthouder op het energienetwerk de controle over drie schepen "voor onbepaalde tijd" overnam nadat Berlijn in april de eigendom van Gazprom Germania had overgenomen.
    
    Twee Dynagas-schepen, de rivier de Amur en de rivier de Ob, werden tot 2028 gecharterd aan een Gazprom-eenheid, terwijl het schip Clean Energy tot 2026 aan de eenheid werd gecharterd. Ze zijn nu allemaal overgenomen door Berlijn.
    
    Duitsland greep de controle over Gazprom Germania, dat de grootste gasopslagfaciliteit van het land beheert, om zijn energievoorziening veilig te stellen tijdens het conflict in Oekraïne. Het heeft het bedrijf sindsdien omgedoopt tot Securing Energy for Europe.
    
    De overname kwam nadat Gazprom zei dat het niet langer de dochteronderneming Gazprom Germania bezat, maar weigerde de nieuwe eigendomsstructuur van de eenheid bekend te maken.
