    NECSEL-Based Device Demos at CES

    SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 2, 2007 -- A variety of prototype display products employing Novalux Inc.'s NECSEL (Novalux extended cavity surface-emitting laser) technology will be demonstrated at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), to be held Jan. 8-11 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

    The company said it is using the technology in, for example, laser-based high-definition television (HDTV), digital cinema and miniature projection devices.

    Greg Niven, Novalux vice president of marketing, said, "Until now, each of these devices has been limited by either inadequate lamp or LED performance or bulky and expensive lasers. Our NECSEL laser platform is the high-performance, low-cost enabler in every case. Attendees will see the brightest, most colorful HDTV, pocket projector and pico-projector examples to date, along with a never-before-shown laser digital cinema demonstration."

    To showcase the laser TV's performance, Novalux has filmed original high-definition content. Ultimately, Niven said, NECSEL technology could enable home theater systems that combine "more than 200 percent of NTSC color coverage; high-brightness, high-resolution images; a thin, wide viewing angle architecture; and an unsurpassed light source lifetime, all at a lower cost."

    Novalux will also debut a prototype laser front projector to illustrate how NECSEL technology could enable high-quality, cost-effective digital cinema. The company said fiber-coupled NECSEL modules can be grouped to produce the desired lumens to support even the largest theater screens.
    "This means bright light from a compact, efficient laser projector without the rigorous cooling requirements of lamp-based units," the company said.

    Novalux will show demo prototype miniature projectors, including a laser-based pocket projector that it said outshines a competitive LED unit, and a two-dimensional MEMS scanning device. The miniscule device is the forerunner to the "embedded" projectors slated for integration into cell phones, PDAs and camcorders, it said.

    Novalux is planning to launch a NECSEL Web site at www.necsel.com to coincide with CES 2007. Novelux said its open-house hours at CES will be Jan. 8 and 9 from 3 to 6 p.m.
